How to configure a TPE-R1400 router for use with a TPE-USB4G2US modem

New shorter set of directions for configuring a TPE-R1400 router for use with a ThinkPenguin TPE-USB4G2US USB 4G modem. These directions have been vetted with a TPE-R1400 router, libreCMC 6.4 (OEM release, available from librecmc.org), and a TPE-USB4G2US modem using an AT&T activated SIM card and an APN of broadband.

Make sure you have a clean router running the latest OEM release of libreCMC 6.4+.

0. Download the 4g-modem-default-configuration-sep-2025.tar.gz

1. Connect an ethernet cable from your LAN port on the TPE-R1400 and then the other end of the cable to your computer.

2. Connect to the network using your network applet in the lower right or upper right corner.

3. Open a web browser and enter into the address line https://192.168.10.1

4. You will get a warning about a self signed certificate, this is actually slightly better security wise than no encryption, so click the Advanced... button then the Accept the risk and Continue button (at least for Firefox).

5. Click the Log in button (there is no password set by default)

6. Go to System > Backup / Flash Firmware

7. Under the Restore section click the Upload archive... button, then the Browse... button, and select the 4g-modem-default-configuration-sep-2025.tar.gz

8. Click the Upload button to upload the default 4G modem configuration and confirm you want to upload the files

9. After 60 seconds use your network applet on your computer to disconnect from the network, then try reconnecting

10. If the network applet shows you've got a 192.168.8.x IP then you've successfully uploaded your 4G modem configuration

11. Try accessing the web user interface login by opening a browser and entering https://192.168.8.1

12. You will see a warning message again, this is normal, click the Advanced ... button and then the Accept the risk and Continue button

13. This time when you login use the password 'none'

14. Go to Network > Interfaces and click the Edit button for WWAN0

15. In the APN box enter the APN of your cellular/mobile broadband provider

16. Click the Save button at the bottom, then the Save & Apply button

17. Go to System > Reboot and click the Perform reboot button

You should now be connected to the internet via your mobile broadband provider.

You can verify this by opening a web browser and going to https://www.infosniper.net/

It should show you the name of the mobile broadband provider. If it does you are connected to the internet via your libreCMC router.

It's also advisable that you change your login password under System > Administration

Note: We have directions for end-users that receive this configuration. The directions below are for configuring the router, not those who have received a router with a 4G modem already configured for use.

It's also possible to follow our directions for configuring the router for use with our PenguinVPN 2.0 Wireguard server on top of the USB 4G modem configuration. The directions for that are available here.
