Dia can be used to draw many different kinds of diagrams. It currently has special objects to help draw entity relationship diagrams, UML diagrams, flowcharts, network diagrams, and many other diagrams. It is also possible to add support for new shapes by writing simple XML files, using a subset of SVG to draw the shape.

OpenOffice or formally OpenOffice.org is a cross-platform office application suite. It supports the ISO/IEC standard OpenDocument Format (ODF) as its default file format, as well as other formats such as Microsoft Office (DOC and DOCX).

AbiWord is a close competitor with Microsoft Word and OpenOffice.org writer. Geared towards transitioning Microsoft Word users it comes with a similar interface and feature set. It includes advanced grammar and spell checking. In addition to saving in its own native format it has support for standard formats such as OpenDocument, as well as Microsoft Word.
