Fedora is a distribution geared at the desktop and backed by Redhat (acquired by IBM in 2019). It provides an ideal familiar platform for system administrators and others who use Redhat Enterprise Linux, Alma Linux, Rocky Linux, and similar distributions in the enterprise. Fedora has one of the shortest life cycles of any distribution in use today. There is a new version released approximately every six months and each new release is supported for about a year. By comparison Redhat Enterprise Linux with an extended life-cycle support subscription can receive critical security updates for as long as 12 years. By comparison to other popular desktop-oriented distributions the range is frequently closer to 3-5 years.
