Tails is a live system that aims to preserve user privacy and anonymity. It enables anonymous access to the Internet via a set of applications and by the passing of one's internet connection through a serious of decentralized, independently operated servers. By using onion-like encryption mechanisms, no individual server knows both where you are and what you're passing. By this mechanism, Tails can ensure your anonymity when accessing traditional websites and/or the "dark web".

It is a complete operating system designed to be used from a USB stick independently of the computer's original operating system. It is Free Software and based on Debian GNU/Linux.

Tails comes with several built-in applications pre-configured with security in mind: web browser, instant messaging client, email client, office suite, image and sound editor, etc.

Unlike many computers designed for "Linux" or other operating systems these systems are designed to work with all flavors / versions of GNU/Linux operating system including Tails.

Ubuntu is a commercially developed Debian-derived flavor of GNU/Linux put out by Canonical. Today it is primarily targeted at users looking for a distribution aimed at servers where a long term commitment to security updates is essential. With an Ubuntu pro subscription on a long term support release of Ubuntu it is possible to get critical security updates for up to 10 years. With an Ubuntu pro subscription (a subscription for the first five devices is free) it's possible to get critical security updates for near all packages in Ubuntu and not just those in the default installation or software installed from the main repository. For those wanting to run Ubuntu on the desktop there is also a short term release of Ubuntu put out every six months.
